Glutathione: The Body’s Master Antioxidant and Why It Matters for Your Health

A clinical perspective from a Nurse Practitioner


In functional and preventive medicine, there are a few compounds that play an outsized role in maintaining health. One of the most important—and often overlooked—is glutathione. Commonly referred to as the “master antioxidant,”glutathione plays a central role in detoxification, immune function, cellular repair, and energy production.

In my clinical practice at Replenish IV Hydration & Wellness, glutathione support is something I frequently incorporate into wellness protocols because of how important it is for protecting the body at the cellular level. Many patients struggling with fatigue, brain fog, inflammation, or toxin exposure may actually have depleted glutathione levels, which can significantly impact how the body performs and recovers.

What Is Glutathione?

Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant produced naturally by the body. It is made from three amino acids: glutamine, cysteine, and glycine. Why Glutathione Levels Decline

Although the body produces glutathione naturally, levels can become depleted over time. Modern lifestyle factors place significant stress on our detoxification systems, and this can reduce the body’s ability to maintain optimal glutathione levels.

Some of the most common factors that lower glutathione include:

  • Chronic stress

  • Environmental toxin exposure

  • Poor diet or nutrient deficiencies

  • Chronic illness

  • Aging

  • Alcohol consumption

  • Inflammation and oxidative stress

When glutathione levels fall, the body becomes more vulnerable to oxidative damage, inflammation, and fatigue.
